We have just come back from our first family holiday and we are currently drowning in piles of clothes that need washing!!
It was lovely to get away although it wasnt exactly restful! We have been to the Lake District with the inlaws and my pregnant sister in law and her husband. We stayed in a 3 bedroom self catering holiday home in Ambleside which was nice as we were able to walk into the town where there were lots of little shops to look round but we also had the car to travel to other nearby places like Windermere.
With this being our first holiday with Freddie we packed the car right to the rafters and took loads of things we probably didn’t need.
So I’ve had a think about what was actually useful that we would take next time we go and thought it would be nice to share it with you!
- Sun hat and suntan cream
One thing that won’t change wherever we are on holiday is the need for a sunhat and a good suntan cream. Both myself and my husband are ridiculously pale – to the point that everytime I go blood doning I get concerned doner carers asking me ‘Oh are you ok love, you do look pale, do you feel faint?’ Yeah, I actually came in this colour thanks….
As a child I got really badly burnt on the back of my legs after digging a hole on the beach and not reapplying cream well enough. I couldnt sleep on my back for days. Therefore I am very aware of what precautions need to be taken with Freddie. I used factor 50 Ambre Solaire for kids and had this cute sunhat from Tu at Sainsburys.
- High chair
This is fairly specific to the type of holiday we had – if you are flying anywhere then this obviously isnt practical, however, if you are packing up your car then you are good to go! Freddie is fully into the swing of weaning now and is eating plenty but he still isnt quite able to sit up unaided, therefore a highchair with straps that go over the shoulders is essential for us – we had a nasty incident in pizza hut not long ago that involved Freddies head, a high chair and a table…….Bad mum.
The high chair we have is this one by Mamas and Papas https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01B17XP7A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
- Baby monitor
Again, this depends on the type of holiday you are having – if you are all in a small hotel room then this isnt necessary. If however you are in a holiday home like ours where the bedrooms are on anothe floor at the other end of the house from the kitchen then a baby monitor is a good call. We didnt take ours and i wish we had as we had a few instances of Freddie balling his eyes out by the time I got to him rather than me making it to him while he was still grizzling. We have this Angelcare movement and sound baby monitor https://www.amazon.co.uk/Angelcare-AC401-Momement-Sound-Monitor/dp/B0013FW5G8/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1464550339&sr=1-2&keywords=angelcare
- Padded Baby Mat
Our play mat was a great shout to take as it served two purposes 1) it has lots of hanging toys and things on the mat to provide amusement and 2) the mat is padded/quilt like which made a nice softer surface for Freddie as the holiday cottage had wooden flooring downstairs. This playmat was a hand me down but there are similar ones like this one by Fisher Price (this is a bit fancier as it also plays music and lights up!) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisher-Price-K4562-Rainforest-Gym/dp/B000FFL58Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1464550375&sr=1-1&keywords=playmat
- Something relaxing for mummy!
Ok…. so not for Freddie, but this was my holiday too and part of the pact with my husband was I agreed to go on holiday with the inlaws if they did some baby sitting and i had some me time, so i had a lovely bath (or two) with a cuppa, my book and a lovely bath bomb i found in a shop in Grassmere 🙂
Let me know what your holiday essentials for baby are 🙂
