Out and About with Freddie – Sing and Sign

Evening everyone! I hope you are all having a nice week. The weather has changed again here in Sheffield and we have had rain all day and now the Thunder has started…..eek! June is proving to be a very odd weather month indeed!

Today me and Freddie have been out and about, making the most of indoor activities. We have been for lunch with the other yoga mums,, it was nice to see everyone but I think Freddie is having a growth spurt, so he hadn’t had more than 15 minutes nap all morning and was a bit tired and cranky. He also got slapped in the face by one of the other babies which he didnt like at all! She was trying to be affectionate bless her! It’s like when Freddie tries to grab my eyeball, they mean it lovingly (I think!) but just don’t have the fine motor skills yet!!

What a Mr Grump!

Before that we went to our second Sing and Sign class. Our class is run by a lovely lady called Jo and there are a total of 5 lessons to attend- we missed week one as it was when we were on holiday, but last weeks was about being Consistent and today’s was focussed on Repetition. The final two weeks lessons are themed around Sounds & Babble and Taking Turns.

The two classes I have been to have been really enjoyable, they involve Jo singing and signing along with the words to her songs, and us joining in and demonstrating the signs to our baby. I think there may have been some accompanying materials for the class I haven’t read as some others seem to know the songs before hand. I just sort of make it up as I go along…… This week featured a mix of songs from the week before and some which were new today. The classes have discussed what the topic titles said they would – being consistent with your signing i.e. being careful to make the same sign for the same word each time and making it every time you use the word, and about repeating words and signs over and over so that baby starts to associate them with each other.

Today I also picked up the items that I ordered last week – I have a DVD which is full of all the songs that we do in the class and a vocabulary book of 200 useful everyday words to use with your baby. I have flicked through the book and it has lots of useful words like – Yes, No, Thank you, Milk, Play, More, Mummy and Love. I haven’t watched the DVD yet but apparently it’s a bit old and ‘retro’ (I think maybe it was made in the 90’s) but everything in it is still up to date and really useful, so I look forward to putting that on tomorrow.

I am not sure hoe much Freddie got out of the class as he wasn’t looking at me much, he was too busy looking at the other babies and at the teacher so he didnt watch me sign! He seemed to enjoy it though, and I learned some new signs and hopefully we can do the DVD together and if I am consistent in using signs he will get it.

The only thing that’s not so great about the class is that all the other mums already seem to know each other, I think maybe they all signed up from an NCT class or something. I am going to attempt to sign up for the next level Stage 1 class in September, so hopefully by then I will know the other mums better and feel a bit more in the loop.

I didn’t manage to get any proper class photos as my hands were busy!

Is anyone else doing or have you done sing and sign? What did you think?

Sounds like a lovely class, we’ve never done any sing & sign classes but I did baby music when my daughter was born and she totally loved them- she’s now obsessed with anything musical at 2 and a half! Poor Freddie getting a slap though- the other baby clearly loves him 🙂 xx #fortheloveofBLOG

Aww Freddie is just soo cute! Such big eyes! Going to be a little heartbreaker I think 😉 I have always wanted to try baby sign language but nowhere does it round here in the sticks! I might try some online resources and do it at home. At least I won’t have to brave any NCT cliques (the worst!) Thanks for sharing on #fortheloveofBLOG x

Ah, thanks, I think he is a cutie too! You can get DVDs from Sing and sign to do at home – not as sociable but they are really good fun and Freddie seems to love the one we have x
